Fire Safe

Hey, Fox Hollow! This is the third installment into the “Leadership” series I have been doing to give you readers a glimpse into who helps our community run smoothly. In this section, I had the pleasure of interviewing Tyler Hayes. Tyler is our head of department for Ravenwood Fire. It was an absolute joy to be able to sit down and ask him questions about our city! I hope you enjoy.

Question 1: How long have you been living in Fox Hollow? I I don’t actively live in Fox Hollow, but I have been an active part of the community since January 3rd, 2020 and absolutely love it.

Question 2: I know running the fire station is hard work! However, what do you find the most challenging about your duties and why? Honestly, every challenge with running the Fire Department is 100% worth it, but, if I had to single out the hardest part of my duties, it would have to be keeping up with everyone’s schedules, I actively have to remember twenty-two people’s personal schedules as we schedule their hours around their lives to make things easier.

Question 3: When you’re not serving your community, how do you spend your free time? When I’m not serving the community, I’m making documents for the city, or spending time with my wife and kids at our home just outside of Jasper County or I’m out exploring the other communities.

Question 4: Give us an inside look into your interests. What are some of your hobbies and favorite things? Some of my hobbies include reading, listening to music, and playing video games with friends and family.

Question 5: Many residents in Fox Hollow might not be aware of how the fire department works. How does the fire department efficiently keep the town safe? The Fire Department is the most diverse system with in Fox Hollow, we operate off of standards from, The National Fire Protection Association, International Fire Service Training Association and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. We hold all members accountable to up to 15 training certifications in all forms of fire, EMS and advanced rescue skills, we are constantly mapping and surveying the community to see how we can diversify our response efforts, and we actively keep around 4 to 5 full time firefighters available at all times. We also use a paging network out of Fox Hollow that alerts our members even if they aren’t actively in the area so they know at all times when to head to town for a call.

Question 6: What is your favorite place in Fox Hollow? Why do you enjoy it? My favorite place in our community is the overlook just off of Highway 14 at the far north edge of the state park. It allows the perfect view over our city.

Question 7: What are some safety tips for avoiding fire and/or danger you can give to the readers? To avoid fire or danger we encourage all families to have fire safety plans, including escape plans for their homes, sleeping with their doors closed to slow fire spread and making sure they turn off all appliances when they leave. We also encourage all families to keep a fire extinguisher and first aid kit in their homes.
